Pitchers Continue to Impress at 2014 UA Memorial Day Classic

After a strong start on Friday night, the pitchers maintained their early summer edge over the hitters on the weekend.

RHP Triston McKenzie

Easton Rockets 18 RHP Triston McKenzie

The Easton Rockets 18 ran out a pair of aces early Saturday morning. Junior right handers Triston McKenzie (Royal Palm Beach HS) and Austin Smith (Park Vista HS) impressed in short outings. McKenzie stands at 6-foot-5 and 165 pounds, and features a loose quick arm. He commanded his fastball around 90 and as high as 92. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Smith is an imposing presence on the mound. He spun a tight breaking ball and ran his fastball up to 91 with low effort.

Boca Thunder junior right hander Mitchell Carroll (Highlands Christian HS) has a smaller frame than McKenzie or Smith, but like them he ran his fastball up to 91 on the top end. We saw Carroll top at 85 in 2013, making for an impressive velocity jump in just a year. Thunder two-way guy Adam Saks topped at 88, giving them a duo of strong armed right handers. Though he’s a couple of years younger, Palm Beach PAL 15 freshman Tyler Ahearn has a similar build and similar stuff to Carroll. He topped at 87 on Saturday and then bumped his top end fastball up to 89 on Sunday.

Easton Rockets 16 2018 righty Kristopher Armstrong (Benjamin School) stands at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, and touched 86 numerous times. He reportedly throws the ball pretty well from the left side as well, making him the only switch pitcher and switch hitter I’ve ever heard of. Even with his pitching bloodlines, I’m not sure I’d take the bat out of his hands – he’s got advanced feel for hitting from both sides of the plate, and he hasn’t even started high school yet.

LHP Clayton Morell

South Florida Clippers 18 LHP Clayton Morell

Florida Legends 2015 right hander Jose Gorordo flashed an impressive two pitch mix. He featured a loose, quick arm and ran his fastball up to 89 to go with a breaking ball thrown as high as 79. Standing a couple of inches taller at 6-foot-2, Easton Rockets 18 righty Dylan Gordon (American Heritage HS) also featured glimpses of impressive stuff. His fastball had late sink and sat in the 87-88 range.

In the midst of a group heavy on right handers, Clayton Morell of the South Florida Clippers 18 stood out as among the top left handers. The Kings Academy junior topped at 88 and featured heavy arm side life to his fastball.

Arms Leadoff the 2014 UA Memorial Day Classic

Given the preference to watch position players a little longer before filing any reports, it’s typical for the early entries to be heavy on arms. So, as expected, day one of the 2014 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic belonged to the pitchers.

Marlins Tower at the Roger Dean Sports Complex in Jupiter, FL

Of the 51 teams in this tournament, only 22 played on Friday at the Roger Dean Sports Complex in Jupiter, FL. While we’re certain to see more quality arms on Saturday as the remaining teams take the field for the first time, let’s first take a quick look back at the standouts from day one.

The top reading on the radar gun belonged to 5-foot-9 senior left hander Hector Montano of the A’s Baseball 18 Elite, who topped at 92 and pitched at 87-89. His teammate Luis Machado, a 6-foot-5 235 pound junior right hander, topped at 91 and pitched 87-88.

Like Machado, three other large frame right handers offered an interesting combination of projectable size and arm strength. 2015 grad William Guay of the PBC Gameday Elite 17 stands at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, and ran his fastball up to 86 with arm side run. At 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, junior Brock Minich of the Palm Beach Select 17 also topped at 86 with potential to grab additional mph as he fills out. Right hander Taylor D’Agostino of the South Florida Breakers 16 has a low 80s fastball today, but he’s only a 2016 graduate and already stands at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds with an arm that works and the ability to spin a breaking ball.

The most impressive three pitch mix was turned in by 2015 right hander Leo Rodriguez of the TigerTown Tigers. He spun a low 70s breaking ball, showed feel for a mid 70s change and featured an 84-86/87 fastball with heavy arm side life.

Look for more scouting reports on position players to post as teams put their second and third games in the books. It takes a little more time to see their skills come out at the plate, in the field and on the bases.

Kyle Molnar Tops at 92, Blake Sabol Is A Future Standout

Aliso Niguel HS Junior right hander Kyle Molnar (UCLA commit, and one of the first 10 players announced for the 2014 Under Armour All-America Game) started the first game of the day for the Wolverines.

He touched 92 and pitched in the 88-90 range. Fastball had some arm side run from a three quarters angle, and went with a breaking ball from a little higher slot with 11-5 shape in the low to sometimes mid-upper 70s, and a very good change in the low 80s.

He had excellent feel for the change in particular, and at times turned it over for diving sink action. It is uncommon to see strong armed pitchers offer evidence of a CH, normally an offering some 8-10 mph off a low 90s fastball is simply a gift to HS hitters – but that isn’t the case with Molnar, and he’s only a junior. He was able to add and subtract with his breaking ball some as well, generating a shorter break with plane from his hand a little nearer his fastball when he dialed it up to 76.

He is very patient with his delivery, taking his time to gather his core. He remains very stable over the rubber, and lands under control as well – the potential to eventually command all three pitches is founded in this for me. He already has a great feel for pitching, and is a talented and capable athlete with arm strength and a quality three pitch mix.

Sophomore Blake Sabol has a long, lean frame that looks taller than the 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds he is given on the roster. He doesn’t appear to have much strength yet, but his hands work to hit and he is a versatile defender capable of playing 1B and OF in addition to what appears to be his natural spot behind the plate. As he matures and fills out it is easy to imagine him developing into a top guy in the 2016 class.

Over the course of two days and parts of three games, senior SS Justin Fowler (Dartmouth College commit) has grown on me. He has a calm and mature approach to the game, along with solid and usable hit and field tools. He has a good feel for the game, plays a dependable shortstop and hits in the middle of the order.

Mac Marshall Throws CG Shutout

Parkview HS senior left hander Mac Marshall (LSU commit) was the last of the known quantity 2014 arms to go, pitching in the afternoon on Thursday. He did not dissapoint, with a complete game shutout victory in which he allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk against 6 strikeouts.

Early on, he reached 91 with has fastball and sat in the upper 80s. He effectively pitched with a solid change and curve, giving him a usable three pitch mix. His delivery is athletic, and when he got his arm up on the back side he was able to drive his fastball down through the zone with nice plane. He is a unique and talented athlete, certainly not the kind of athlete we see commonly in left handed pitchers. His feel for pitching was better than I was aware of, having only seen him previously in a workout. Later in the game he had clearly lost the zip on his stuff, and struggled a bit for consistentcy with how his arm worked from the glove – but he still competed with all three pitches to preserve a shutout, an impressive performance indicative of a competitive makeup.

Another guy I liked in glimpses was Parkview senior third baseman Jim Wagner (Georgia Regents Univ. commit). He showed good hands and body control defensively, along with a nice left handed stroke.

Foster Griffin Tops at 91 On Way To CG Shutout

The First Academy (Orlando, FL) senior left hander Foster Griffin, a Univ. of Mississippi commit and 2013 Under Armour All-America Game participant, started for the Royals and recorded a complete game shutout victory.

He allowed three hits and two walks against 8 strikeouts over seven innings of work. He topped at 91 with his fastball, pitched in the upper 80s, and featured great feel for his change up. He effectively mixed in his breaking ball as well, giving him a solid three pitch mix and command of his best two. His delivery is athletic and he generates quality stuff with little effort. He is a right handed hitter, and collected two hits in three at bats on the day.

In a short look, Royals senior OF Adam Haseley (Univ. of Virginia commmit) offers an interesting run-hit combination. He is a quick twitch athlete, and relies on quickness to hit more than rhythm or fluidity. His left handed stroke is short, and he appears to run very well (I didn’t get any run times today).

Touki Toussaint Punches Out 12, Tops at 94

2014 right hander Touki Toussaint started for the Coral Springs Christian Crusaders, just as he did in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game. He reached 94 with his fastball, and spun his usual tight breaking ball with depth to its downward action. Through 6 innings of work, he punched out 12 and allowed just 1 hit. He issued 5 walks, but stranded each of the baserunners and allowed no runs, and earned the win in a 1-0 victory over Orange Lutheran.

Toussaint’s battery mate was senior Benito Santiago, a Univ. of Tennessee commit. His defensive skills are advanced, he handled Toussaint’s stuff with ease – which is no small task – and kept the pace of the game moving nicely. He has plenty of arm strength, along with a clean release. He collected one of the two Crusader hits on the day (Toussaint had the other).

Senior Jeremiah Muhammed, scheduled to attend Miami Dade CC, recorded the save with a scoreless seventh inning. The 6-foot-4 and 220 pound right hander worked between 85 and 89 with his fastball, struck out one and walked one.

Michael Gettys Tops at 90 in Complete Game Victory

Though he is more widely recognized as one of the top position players in the 2014 draft class, Gainesville senior Michael Gettys (Univ. of Georgia commit, and 2013 Under Armour All-America Game participant) started on the mound for the Red Elephants.

He worked in the upper 80s with his fastball, and touched 90 quite a few times. He allowed two earned runs in a complete game victory over a talented and accomplished Venice (FL) High School team. In addition to his fastball, he featured two types of breaking balls. He threw a lot of strikes with a low 70s version, and was able to bury a mid to upper 70s version with more depth and a shorter break. He was effectively pitched around in his trips to the plate, but gathered a big crowd of interested observers with each trip.
